Psychology Needs Soul, Not Just Science.

On why the name exists, what it actually means, and why that distinction matters more than you might think.

Someone asked me recently if I support my clients clinically. They'd seen the word "psychology" in my business name, Psychology of The Heart, and thought I may have a clinical approach in how I work with clients. I mean, not a far fetched idea.

But what I thought was interesting was how the word “psychology” seems to bring up specific ideals or expectations in people.

One of my favorites that comes to mind from undergrad was someone always asking: “So, what are you majoring in?” and following my reply of “Psychology,” I’d always get something along the lines of  “Oh, she’s analyzing me right now. Are you analyzing me now? You’re analyzing me now. Don’t tell me what you see.”

I mean, if I had a dollar for every time someone said something like that to me...

The Word "Psychology" Was Never the Problem

Psychology, in its most textbook definition, is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. That part is accurate.

What that definition leaves out entirely is the reason it matters.

And the reason it has always mattered is the heart. Not as a metaphor for being soft or emotionally led in ways that cost you credibility.

The heart as the actual center of things. The place where your earliest experiences of being too much, or never quite enough, or having to be easy and low-maintenance to stay connected to the people who mattered.

The place where the patterns that now run your leadership, your decisions, your capacity to delegate or rest or ask for help, were first formed.

Those patterns did not begin in your business. Nor did they stay locked away; they traveled with you.

They began in you; with you. Long before you had a team to manage or a vision to execute or a revenue goal that kept you up at night. The heart is where the original you lives. Dare I say, your original blueprint to life and business.

And until someone actually sits with you inside that blueprint, all the strategy in the world is just rearranging furniture in a house built on a foundation nobody has looked at yet.

Patterns of the heart are the operational patterns of your business. I cannot separate those two things, and I'm not interested in pretending I can.

Why You Stay Stuck Even With the Right Tools

This is where it gets real for a lot of the people I work with. They are not spinning plates because they lack intelligence or strategy or capability or drive.

They are often over-functioning, over-responsible, holding every thread of the business inside their body because somewhere in their history, being the reliable one, the one who held it all together, was how they stayed valued.

How they stayed safe. And that pattern, which once made complete sense, is now the exact thing eroding their capacity to lead sustainably.

It shows up as the inability to fully trust the team they hired (or the people ready to support you in personal life).

As decisions made from exhaustion dressed up as high standards.

As the midnight emails, the skipped boundaries, the calendar that has everyone else's priorities on it and almost none of their own.

It shows up as "I built this thing, this life, this business, and now it owns me" to yourself but never aloud, like it could never be true for someone this capable.

Sitting With You, Not Analyzing You

I did not build this work from a place of having figured it out. I built it from a deeply familiar place of never feeling quite good enough, and from a deep, firm refusal to believe that success had to come at the cost of our nervous systems, our values, or our sense of self.

I watched what hustle culture did up close. I watched how the pressure to always be on, always be growing, always be producing erodes the very confidence and capacity that made the work worth doing in the first place.

So when I say Psychology of The Heart, I mean the study of how the heart and mind move together through the experience of building something. How who we were shapes how we lead now. How the stories we have been running on, often without knowing it, become the ceiling of our growth, disguised as personality, disguised as preference, disguised as "this is just how I operate."

The patterns we study here are not problems to fix. They are stories to understand. Because when you understand the story, you stop being governed by it. And that is when your leadership actually changes.

So no. I don’t approach my work through therapeutic diagnostic frameworks. And while clinical psychology has a very critical and necessary place in the world, it’s not the work I’m doing here.  What I do is support the people I partner with to be human in the full complexity of what they are carrying and building at the same time.

I work with a human and organizational system lens; in the moment where the pattern is still actively shaping how you decide, how you hold on, how you overextend, how you keep going long past the point your body has already started asking for something different.

Patterns live inside behavior, how they show up in leadership, roles, functions, and the way a business actually runs in real time and how it impacts you and your team's well-being.

This is the space where someone finally says the thing they have been carrying for months, the thing that does not belong in a Slack message or a leadership book: “I don’t know how long I can keep doing it like this.”

You know, the feeling that lives in the heart but the one you can’t say to your team, or a loved one who just doesn’t get it or the people who rely on you to have it together. The feeling that lingers in the body before it becomes language you can share.

In the late night thinking. In the moments between what you are holding together for everyone else and what you are barely holding together for yourself.

And if you are willing to stay with it, really stay with it, without rushing to fix it or move past it, what begins to reveal itself is that the strategy to change it was never separate from the pattern itself.

The answer has been sitting inside it, inside of you, the entire time, pointing to exactly what is ready to shift.

Permission You Did Not Know You Were Waiting For

That's the work. Not the analysis of you from a diagnostic vantage point. The work is sitting with you, in the real complexity of who you are and what you've built and what it's secretly costing you to keep building it the way you have been.

I grow with my clients. (And honestly one of my favorite moments to experience.) I know their businesses inside out because I was there while they were building them.

You never have to start from scratch with me or re-explain yourself or translate your history for someone who wasn't in the room when it was made.

Psychology of The Heart is not about being emotional in your business. It's about being honest about what's shaping it.

It's about recognizing that your most strategic decisions live in the same body that carries every story you've ever told yourself about your worth, your capacity, and what you're allowed to need.

And when those stories go unexamined, they become the ceiling of your growth, disguised as personality, disguised as preference, disguised as "this is just how I lead."

You don't have to untangle which part is the psychology and which part is the heart. That's my job. And I'm not across from you with a legal pad. I'm sitting with you. That's what this name has always meant.

So here is the question I will leave you with, and I mean it in the most genuinely curious, non-pressured way: What story has your heart been running on that your leadership has been paying the price for?

And this is not to judge it, but just to finally look at it. What I like to call the ‘judge-free observational period’ Because the version of you who understands that story is already a more grounded, more sustainable, more ‘fully yourself’ kind of leader. And that version of you has been waiting a long while to break free.

Take good care of yourself this week, and know that wherever you are in the process of figuring this out, you do not have to do it alone. If you want to go deeper, the Psychology of The Heart Podcast is always there waiting for you.

With heart,
